History
Carpenter & Company was formed in 1974, when our founder left his position in strategic planning at Security Pacific National Bank to start a bank consulting practice. The objective: to provide high quality strategic thinking, market planning, and financial analysis to banks of all sizes.
The Firm’s first decade was about supporting banks in growth and expansion plans. Over that decade, hundreds of clients were assisted in establishing new banks, and growing and expanding their existing businesses. Clients included major international banks seeking US market entry, national and regional US banks, and community banks of all sizes.
Our second decade saw asset quality issues dominating banking, and our practice expanded significantly in response. With various partners, we were one of the largest RTC and FDIC asset management contractors, managing the collection and resolution of hundreds of assets with a book value in excess of $3 billion. We put those workout skills at the service of our bank clients, advising on collections, balance sheet restructurings, and regulatory matters.
We added investment banking to our services in our third decade. Support in mergers and acquisitions and capital for recovery and renewed growth were the industry’s major needs. We started our broker-dealer, and completed hundreds of financial advisory and capital assignments
Advising for growth, assisting with challenges, and understanding investment and value building – these are the core competencies we built in our first thirty years. They are also critical disciplines midway through our fourth decade, and to the fiduciary management that is our largest activity today.
As the Firm has evolved from a one man start-up to a registered bank holding company regulated by the Federal Reserve, the SEC, and FINRA, there has been a constant theme – nurture and support the relationships and knowledge that meet the current needs of the banking and financial services industry.
